Stress Incontinence
Stress Incontinence is the termed used for uncontrolled loss of urine in men usually after surgery on the prostate gland. It is a common problem, which can cause considerable distress and embarrassment for the patient. After radical prostatectomy (laparoscopic or retropubic), the male continence mechanism and the controlling nerves are structurally damaged.
What is urinary Incontinence?
Urinary incontinence is the inability to control urine elimination. You may lose urine at times that you do not choose to do so. Urinary incontinence is more common in older people, but incontinence can be seen in children, adolescence and adults, both male and female, although more women seem to suffer from this embarrassing condition than men.
Urinary incontinence is the involuntary release of urine. It may be caused by physiologic, pharmacologic, pathologic, or psychological factors. There are two main types of urinary incontinence: stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Incontinence is most common among the elderly. Older men can become incontinent as the result of prostate surgery. Urinary incontinence can be caused by many different medical problems, including weak pelvic muscles or diabetes. According to the International Continence Society, urinary incontinence is defined as a condition of involuntary urine loss that is objectively demonstrable and is a social or hygienic problem. It is often temporary, and it almost always results from an underlying medical condition. Women experience incontinence twice as often as men. Pregnancy and childbirth, menopause, and the structure of the female urinary tract account for this difference.
Incontinence is not a disease, but actually a symptom of an underlying health problem. Unmanaged, it can lead to isolation, stigmatization, embarrassment, and even feelings of depression. The good news is that it can always be effectively managed, and very often cured.
Incontinence in Men

Incontinence is a medical symptom, and it deserves the same attention you would give to any other medical problem. Incontinence in men has become a more frequent occurrence in recent times, mainly as a side effect of radical surgery for cancer.
